Free CSV Analyzer vs ChatGPT: an honest comparison

Pasting a spreadsheet into a chat assistant is the fastest way to ask a question about data, and for a one-off it is often good enough. It is also a different kind of tool from a SQL-backed analyzer, and the differences show up exactly where tabular work gets risky: arithmetic over many rows, reproducible charts, and knowing what was actually calculated.

This is a comparison, not a dismissal. Here is where each option is the better choice.

What happens when you upload a CSV to a chatbot

The file goes to that provider's servers, and their retention, training, and account settings apply. From there the assistant reads rows as text and answers in prose. That works well for interpretation: "summarize these customer comments," "what stands out in this list," "draft a paragraph about this quarter."

It is weaker for calculation. When the numbers matter, a chat answer usually does not come with a query you can inspect, so verifying a total means re-asking and hoping for agreement. File-size and message limits also apply, and on a large export the assistant sees only what fits in its context.

What AskCSV does differently

AskCSV is built around one narrow job: answer a question about a CSV or Excel file with a number, table, or chart you can verify.

• Charts come from real query results. Your question is turned into read-only SQL that runs over the full file with DuckDB in your browser. The chart is built from that result by code, so a bar for "North" reflects the rows that match "North" — not a model's impression of them.
• The SQL is shown. Every chart exposes the query behind it. If you meant net revenue and the query summed gross revenue, you can see it.
• Totals, shares, and trends are deterministic. These are computed in code from the result. The AI writes the explanation, not the figures.
• Multi-turn refinement is the normal path. Ask "revenue by region," then "now by month," then "only the top 5." Each follow-up re-queries the same local file.
• Your file stays in your browser. It is not uploaded, and there is no server copy. Files and chats stay until you delete them or clear the site's data; guest credits expire 7 days after they are issued.
• What the AI sees is kept to a minimum, by design. The AI provider (OpenAI) gets only your question, the file's name and row count, the columns you chose to share with up to 10 sample rows, up to 100 rows of each query result plus summary figures, and the earlier messages in the chat — never the file itself.

Where a chatbot is the better tool

• Open-ended reasoning over text. Comments, contracts, support tickets, and mixed documents are chat territory.
• Writing and editing around the numbers, rather than computing them.
• One-off questions where a rough answer is fine and no one will audit it.

For those jobs, use the chat assistant. For "what is the total, by group, and can I see the query," use an analyzer that shows its work.

Plans and limits

Credits pay only for the tokens the AI reads and writes; opening files and viewing charts are free. AskCSV analyzes opened files only — there is no direct database connection — and AI answers can be wrong, which is why the SQL is shown for every chart.
